· Good prenatal care is important for the health of your unborn child. Make an appointment as soon as you know you are pregnant and don’t skip any of your prenatal appointments. If there are to be any problems with your pregnancy the sooner they are detected the better!

· One of the best pregnancy tips I can give you is – stop smoking, preferably before you get pregnant but certainly once you are pregnant. Smoking is bad for the baby’s health, even secondary smoke so avoid smoky environments and ask people not to smoke around you.

· Stop drinking. No level of alcohol during pregnancy has been proven safe so stay off the alcohol throughout your pregnancy and while nursing.

· Exercise. Always check with your health care practitioner to make sure you get the amount of exercise that is right for you (in some circumstances exercise is not advisable) but as a general rule exercise is beneficial. It has been shown that exercising while you are pregnant can help reduce the time you spend in labour, aid your recovery following the birth, reduce the need for cesarean, help you return to your pre-pregnancy weight quicker and improve your overall health.

· Swimming is an excellent source of exercise which can help ease your aches and pains.

· Another top pregnancy tip is to change your eating habits as soon as you find out you are pregnant. Eat foods that are high in fibre, eat plenty of vegetables and include foods rich in iron, calcium, protein and folate in your diet.

· Talk to your health care provider about what you should eat and how much weight you should gain. If your diet is unlikely to contain sufficient folate, iron and calcium your practitioner is likely to recommend that you take supplements.

· Eat foods that are high in fibre, eat plenty of vegetables and include foods rich in iron, calcium, protein and folate in your diet.

· Eat a balanced diet and eat regularly. Don’t skip meals and don’t try and diet during pregnancy. Remember you are eating for two so you need to add 300 – 500 (healthy) calories a day to your diet.

· Limit your caffeine intake (tea, coffee, chocolate and soft drinks).

· Drink plenty of water, six – eight glasses a day.

· Join a prenatal class.

· First hand experience with babies is invaluable experience. If you have any friends or family with a baby offer to baby sit, get some experience and learn the ropes.

· When the nursery is being prepared remember, you as the expectant mum, must avoid all harmful fumes such paint stripper, paint and wall paper glue and delegate the heavy work.

· Don’t forget to baby proof your home.

· If you don’t have life insurance then now is the time to take out a policy.

· Make sure you have a Family Health Insurance Plan.

· Get your bags packed well in advance, you might have a due date but that doesn’t mean that your baby intends to stick to it!

Nausea is common in pregnancy and can be more often seen in early stages of pregnancy. However in some cases nausea continues up to the starting of 7th month.

My wife, Rubina who is 7 months pregnant has had to face this right from the start but thank GOD, we found out a solution to this. Initially, when her pregnancy started, she would vomit out everything she ate and we could see her losing weight instead of gaining.

We were a little apprehensive until we spoke with the doctor to clear our doubts.

Nausea can be controlled through diet. It is recommended that during pregnancy a lady should consume between 80 grams to 100 grams of protein everyday. Apart from this she should not eat too much of oily and junk food.

It sounds a little strange but its true that proteins is the answer to nausea during pregnancy. You will notice once you have a protein rich diet, your throwing up will almost vanish.

I must say this is the most important pregnancy tip as this not only helps you control nausea but also is good for the baby.

In pregnancy, every woman experiences hormonal changes. Because of this, she may get nauseated and as a result may cut her food which is not wisdom.

It would be wise of her if she could make her diet protein rich by adding, chicken, cow milk, soybeans, cheese cottage, egg white etc, in her diet schedule.

Some of the common sources to protein are

Egg white- Generally contains 4 gram per egg.

Cow Milk- 8 grams per cup

Chicken or Turkey- approximately 40 grams per cup

Fish- 30-35 grams fillet

Pork and Beef – approximately 25 grams per 3 oz

Cottage Cheese- 30 grams per cup

Couscous- approximately 20 grams per cup

Soybeans- approximately 30 grams per cup

Long grain white rice- 13 grams per cup

Baked Beans- approximately 15 grams per cup

Lima Beans- 10 grams plus per cup

Trail Mix- 20 grams per cup

Yogurt- approximately 10 grams per cup

Apart from these boiled black chickpeas is a great source of protein as well. You can have them in soup or as per your liking and you would see the results for your self.

Keeping trail mix, almonds and peanuts with you will always be good and if you feel nauseated and have to vomit, eating a handful of nuts would level up things for you.

It s always good if you can get your desired protein from the food as well but if you can’t get that try some protein powder but I would suggest not to have too much of protein powder during pregnancy. Protein from natural source will always be better.

Vegetarians might have to give up on taste a little bit but I guess doing that much for nine months in exchange of a healthy baby won’t at all be a bad deal.
